Missional Lawyering

What is "Missional Lawyering"? It is a philosophy of practice that strives to promote servant leadership while offering a holistic approach to the attorney-client relationship by addressing more than just your legal needs. As Missional Lawyers, we will walk alongside you as a trusted legal advisor and then, hopefully, as a friend. Missional Lawyering is rooted in the belief that law is truly a calling, not just a profession.

Missional Lawyering is not just an aspiration, but a practical philosophy that plays out in tangible ways. First, by adhering to the call to "[s]peak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." Coastal Legal Counsel currently provides pro bono legal services to the individuals who are served by North Carolina Legal AidVigilant Hope, and other area non-profits. Second, by helping bridge the Access to Justice Gap in America by providing "low bono" or sliding scale legal fees and affordable flat rate legal fees. In a country where 80% of people cannot secure access to a lawyer, Missional Lawyering provides access to legal services for people of all income levels.

Missional Lawyering offers a better approach to the provision of legal services by emphasizing the dignity and relationship that we all share as human beings who bear the Image of God. Missional Lawyering seeks to reduce and, ultimately, eradicate the Access to Justice Gap that exists in our country.
